Fact Sheet – Responder Safety
May 13, 2026
The number one priority of the Unified Command is the safety of responders and the public.
• The Unified Command has approved a comprehensive health and safety plan; and all response areas have robust safety plans and systems in place to mitigate hazards and injury. Safety plans address industrial hygiene stressors such as benzene and hydrocarbon exposure, heat and cold stress, noise and work/rest balance.
• Our responders are all wearing personal protective equipment in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. That means responders near the spill are wearing physical barriers such as impermeable suits, chemical resistant boots, gloves and half-face respirators. All responders are also wearing personal floatation devices, hard hats, and safety glasses.
• Responders are continuously reminded through messaging and communications from the Unified Command, to:
o Manage fatigue
o Take breaks
o Stay hydrated
o Use the buddy system to watch out for each other
• Injuries associated with a response are reported in Incident Updates and Press Releases.
