COVID-19 - SEAFARER EMPLOYEMENT AGREEMENTS

Source: Republic of the Marshall Islands - MARITIME ADMINISTRATOR

Original Date Posted: 7/15/2020

This Advisory establishes the Republic of the Marshall Island (RMI) Maritime Administrator (the “Administrator”) expectations for the repatriation of seafarers due to Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). During these unprecedented times pre-planning is key. The Administrator allows for extended seafarer employment agreements (SEAs), provided any extension is mutually agreed in writing between the seafarer and the shipowner (RMI Marine Notice 7-052-2). However, every effort must be made to repatriate the seafarer according to their contractual obligations and avoid fatigue. Operators should be prepared to arrange repatriation prior to the end of the extension period.
