COVID-19: MLC imposes extensive obligations on flag states, port states and shipowners which are relevant to protection of seafarers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Officers of the Special Tripartite Committee, made up of representatives of States, shipowners and seafarers, have issued this Statement which draws attention to the key role played by seafarers and urges member States to adopt a pragmatic approach in responding to the unprecedented challenges resulting from the current crisis. This includes facilitating the return home of those seafarers who have completed their contracts, and allowing seafarers to leave their home country to join their ships, after appropriate medical screening.
